EDLD 5366 Digital Graphics: Week 1 Assignment

I chose a Bible from Ethiopia to investigate as far as principles of design go http://ttpdownload.bl.uk/app_files/xbap/BrowserApp.xbap?id=316a6f8f-ef1b-4d9b-9c46-90084fcb2bc8&spread=0 Even in looking at the first few pages, the use of color is interesting. Although the same colors were used over and over, everything was bright and intricately drawn. This color use can go in to the repetition element of design. Each page with large drawings is encompassed in one of two border designs. Each drawing in this Bible is center aligned. Text is written into symmetrical columns. In the drawings, text is written near the drawings as sort of a 'caption' of what is being portrayed in each drawing. Contrast of color is most striking throughout this Ethiopian Bible, mostly composed of red and yellow. In sections of long writings, black is mostly used. Red is used on contrast in several lines for emphasis. As stated eariler, the author used the color red to emphasize certain lines in the text. These obviously were important, or they wouldn't have been contrasted from the majority of the surrounding text. Artist(s) of the drawings in the Ethiopian Bible used facial expressions of the character drawings as well as repetition of distinct patterns to help us understand the importance of this book and its text.
