EDLD 5370 Week 1.5 Assignment: Reflection on TF Standard I

"Technology Operations and Concepts, technology facilitators and leaders ensure that their colleagues possess the fundamental understanding and skills needed to operation specific technologies and understand the concepts associated with technology use" (Williamson, 2009). With computers and the incorporation of technology incorporated to our lives on a daily basis, I would hope that most educators would already be proficient in TF Standard I. "Educators are more likely than ever before to acquire at least some basic technology proficiences outside of the school environment. The Web, email and basic computing are often a part of educators' daily personal and professional lives, and, as younger teachers enter the workforce, it is increasingly likely that they will not remember a time when they did not have access to the Internet" (Williamson, 2009). Those who have grown up with using the internet and all that relates to each are more likely to incorporate technology concepts into their curriculum. Our district has put into place a required 6 technology hours of professional development per year and we have give faculty opportunity to attend professional development in the summer called Tech Camp. At Tech Camp, there are many sessions to attend for various grade levels and interests. I think that having this available for educators will allow them to be more comfortable with concepts of TF Standard I. "The percentage of schools where teachers considered over half of their colleagues to be 'beginners' in using technology dropped from 35% in 1999 to 15% in 2005" (Williamson, 2009). I find this to be a somewhat surprising statistic. I've only worked in two different districts but the majority of my colleagues are still considered digital immigrants. I would have thought this number to be higher. However, in the coming years, I can see there being more digital natives that digital immigrants in education due to the baby boomer age retiring. Plus, educators need to understand that "having digital technology at their fingertips all the time means that students think, work, and play differently from previous generations" (Soloman, 2007). Because I teach computer classes as well as technology driven classes, I do not see a problem in implementing TF Standard I concepts. I have done the majority of the competencies listed in professional development classes I have conducted as well.
